» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - My thoughts

Nice review.

My thoughts....I find the Shakespearan script and stage acting to be annoying and distracting. It almost makes the Bible comical.

I think your observation that the film is as much political allegory as biblical epic is right on the money. This is seen by all the extrabiblical material in the movie. The script takes a lot of liberties with the Old Testament. It's more a "Based on a true story" film.

Lastly, you write...

More excusable, I suppose, was his blindness to the great ideological shift in society, from traditional Christianity to alternative forms of spiritualism

I'm not sure this is a bad thing. Perhaps he was opposed to this societal shift toward alternative spiritualism.

Brian,

Thanks so much for contributing! For whatever reasons, I get very few "discussion" hits.

I think you're right about DeMille being opposed to a more spiritually diverse America. He was 75 at the time and pretty set in his ways, plus, this was the rigid '50s.

As occasions like Xmas and Easter roll around, I'll definitely be revisiting Christiniaty a la Hollywood. Please keep checking in; I love your intelligent input.

Best,
Dan
