Continuing with their classic films collections, this newest wave of DVD sets include Sci-Fi, Murder Mysteries, and Horror films - four films in each category.

Turner Classic Movies combines some of the best film selections in different categories and puts them into their special collection. Bringing together four films in each category, these collections are the cream of the crop of classic films.

Sci-Fi Classic Films

In the Sci-Fi DVD set, TCM includes Soylent Green, The Time Machine, Forbidden Planet and 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Soylent Green (1973) stars Charlton Heston in a futuristic story of overpopulation. The food supply is short and the government controls everything. Euthanasia is heroic. It is a tense and scary story, which includes Edward G. Robinson. Soylent Green is rated PG.

The Time Machine (1960) is based on H.G. Wells’ novel about time travel. Rod Taylor stars as the inventor of the machine, who takes some incredible journey to the future where life is not all sunshine and roses. This film is rated G.

Forbidden Planet (1956) takes place in 2257 and stars Leslie Nielsen, Walter Pidgeon, and Anne Francis. Scientists are sent to the planet Altair-4 to check up on a previous expedition to the planet. This movie is rated G.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) is perhaps best known for its music and the very intelligent computer HAL, who has a mind of his own. From Stanley Kubrick, this film is rated G.

Classic Murder Mystery Films

The Postman Always Rings Twice, The Big Sleep, Dial M for Murder, and The Maltese Falcon make up this DVD set.

The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946) stars Lana Turner and John Garfield in a tale of passion and murder. To be together they plan to murder her husband, but things don’t go according to plan at first. Then it is story of trusting each other. This film is not rated.

The Big Sleep (1948) is a story of private investigator Philip Marlowe from the novel by Raymond Chandler. Humphrey Bogart stars as the private eye and Lauren Bacall is the woman who catches his attention when he is on a case to keep an eye on a young woman. Murder then comes into play. The Big Sleep is not rated.

Dial M for Murder (1954) is a tense and memorable story starring Grace Kelly as a married woman who falls in love with another man. Her husband then plots to kill her. Kelly shows her dramatic abilities in this film, which is rated PG.

The Maltese Falcon (1941) is one of Humphrey Bogart’s fans favorite films. He stars as Detective Sam Spade. From the book by Dashiell Hammett, Spade is out to find the statue of a falcon and find out why so many people are interested in the figurine. This film is not rated.

Classic Horror Films

This collection contains Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Freaks, House of Wax, and The Haunting.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941) is the classic story of two personalities living inside one person. One is good and the other is evil. Spencer Tracy stars. This film is rated G.

Freaks (1932) is perhaps the lesser known film in this set. It’s the story of carnival characters. There is a midget, a trapeze artist, and others. It’s also the story of compassion and greed. Freaks is not rated.

House of Wax (1953) stars Vincent Price as a sculptor who goes crazy when his museum of wax figures is destroyed in a fire and his hands are burned so he cannot re-sculpt the figures. He finds another way to repopulate the museum. Only Vincent Price could play this part as well as he does. This film is rated GP.
