Looking for a Christmas, Valentine's Day or birthday gift DVD for that special someone? Here are four classic movies for both men and women to enjoy.
When beautiful Princess Buttercup (Robin Wright-Penn) is kidnapped and forced to marry the evil Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon), her childhood sweetheart Westley (Cary Elwes) must come to the rescue.
Why she’ll love it: every woman dreams of a sweetheart like Westley: he’s handsome, he’s charming, and he travels around the world, fighting monsters and outwitting sadistic goons in order to save her. When he dies, it is his love for her that brings him back to life.
Why he’ll love it: In his quest to save Buttercup, Westley must face a giant, fire swamps, Rodents of Unusual Size, a six-fingered psychotic swordsman and the Pit of Despair. Also, guys will love the subplot involving sidekick Inigo Montoya’s (Mandy Patinkin) quest to avenge the death of his father.
Blissfully happy couple Sam (Patrick Swayze) and Molly (Demi Moore) can only be split up by one thing: his murder. Tied to Molly by love, his spirit comes back, and with the help of medium Oda Mae (Whoopi Goldberg), they solve the mystery and have one final moment together.
Why she’ll love it: it’s one of the most tear-jerking love stories ever filmed. When Sam and Molly spend one last moment together through the help of Oda Mae, there won’t be a dry eye in the house.
Why he’ll love it: the story of Sam’s murder, his quest for the facts and his eventual revenge are the stuff of a top-notch thriller. Sam also meets some creepy fellow ghosts along the way, most notably the crazed Subway Pusher (Vincent Schiavelli).
As American, English, French and Native American forces clash for supremacy in the years leading up to the American Revolution, Aristocratic Cora (Madeline Stowe) swoons for raised-by-Indians Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis) as they escape the chaos all around them.
Why she’ll love it: it’s two love stories for the price of one! Not only does Cora fall for Hawkeye, her sister Alice (Jodhi May) is in love with Uncas (Eric Schweig), Hawkeye’s Mohican “brother.” She’ll also like watching handsome Daniel Day-Lewis running through the woods. Both of you will love the soundtrack and the beautiful setting.
Why he’ll love it: when the four romantic leads aren’t mooning at one another, there is a first-rate action movie going on! The whole film is full of battles, betrayals and narrow escapes. While she’s focused on the love story, he’ll be watching Magua (Wes Studi), one of the best movie villains ever, wreaking havoc in his quest for revenge.
Dirt-poor Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and ridiculously wealthy Rose (Kate Winslet) meet and fall in love on history’s most famous doomed ocean liner.
Why she’ll love it: it’s a timeless love story, with a story right out of a bodice-ripper romance. Rose must choose between two men, one of whom (Cal, played by Billy Zane) is handsome and rich but callous and egotistical, while the other, Jack, is poor but honest, charming and brave. The movie is conveniently divided into two halves, for him and her: the love story takes up the first half.
Why he’ll love it: wake him up when the Titanic hits the iceberg. As the ship goes down, it takes the sappy love story with it. Time for some action! The second-half of this movie features some great thrills and some mind-boggling special effects as the doomed men and women scramble and fight for space on the lifeboats.
